I really have a problem with the "literacy" argument. A prime example is India whose citizens kicked out the extremist, neo-liberal BJP after seeing the results, one of which the worsening of the caste system.

Also, there is, arguably, a highly literate population in Europe which is slowly bringing back the neo-fascists (in all their disgusting shades of grey and brown) into power, whether in East Europe, the NL or Belgium. I doubt this is a sign of intelligence.

Knowing how to read does not mean knowing how to think. It applies to Europeans as to anyone else.

True, but I don't think it applies to Egypt. Remember when one person (forgot who) lost the elections because he said yes when asked if he was a liberal? (back story, the opponent was saying that liberal == satanist).

Good point, Khaled. Nick, illiterate does not mean ignorant. Many illiterate people have a robust grasp of politics and many educated people lack it.

The problem with free elections in Egypt is the level of illiteracy. You cannot have a democracy without education.

First off, free elections. I think those who would restore the independence of the judiciary should be elected into office.
