Ahmed, I agree, there will be a lot of cultural convergence. In fact, I think there already has been: most second and third generation immigrants are heavily immersed in the local culture, but some consciously choose to stand out partly as a form of rebellion against their marginalisation, and partly because they feel their heritage is under threat... Read More.

Zvi, good points. As a person who finds living in Europe a welcome release from religious dogma, I think growing dogmatism is scary, and Muslims are the most openly religious community in Europe. But many strands of conservatism, particularly the far right, are also grounded in religion, albeit more subtly. Let's hope cultural diversity with convergence towards mutual respect and understanding are the future, not disruption.

Very interesting article. I think that Europeans are worried because their populations are aging (and it is the older generations who are most afraid), so they are less 'vibrant' relative to the newcomers. Also, the modern 'religion' of Europe has been secularism to a large extent, and Muslim immigrants are perceived as being too religious. I think that it is still too early to say whether 'multi-culturism' has a future, at least in terms of accepting different levels of religious belief. Things become complicated when people become dogmatic in their religious beliefs. Ironically, many Muslims come to Europe to escape such rigid social conventions back home. It will be interesting to see whether cultural convergence or cultural disruption will dominate our future.

Great article Khaled!
I think the fertility rate convergence will also be matched by cultural convergence, a.k.a. assimilation. Europeans seem to presuppose that those newborns are there only to consolidate the numbers of immigrants, not of mainstream Dutch or whatever society.
